School Counselor

St. Oscar Romero provides a multitude of services, including our very own School Counselors.  Supports and services are available for students struggling with social, personal or academic issues that are impacting their ability to succeed at school.  If more intensive supports are required, our School Counselors are able to connect with all members on our Multidisciplinary Team to provide the best wrap around services possible.

A message from Mrs. Kary Laplante - School Counsellor

I understand that adolescence can be a turbulent time, filled with both exciting and stressful experiences. That’s why I offer a supportive environment where students can explore their feelings and learn effective strategies for managing stress and emotions. Through personalized guidance and mindfulness practices, I try to empower students to gain insight into their own needs and strengths, fostering growth and well-being.

Whether students are dealing with academic pressures, social dynamics, or personal issues, I am here to support them right where they are. With a compassionate and non-judgmental approach, I will work to develop practical skills and find balance in students' daily lives. Students shouldn’t have to face challenges by themselves.

I am an inclusive and caring professional with an open-door policy. Students are welcome to stop by my office at any time during the school day. Both students and guardians are welcome to set up a meeting using email or by sending a Team’s message.

A message from Mrs. Julie MacDonald - School Counsellor

I am honored to introduce myself as a new school counsellor at St. Oscar Romero. I am truly excited to be part of a school community that values the growth and development, and well-being of its students - not just academically, but emotionally and socially as well.

At the heart of my counselling philosophy is the belief that every student deserves a safe, welcoming, and inclusive space where they feel seen, heard and supported. I strive to create an environment where students feel comfortable expressing themselves and know that they are not alone in navigating the challenges of high school. My door is open and students are welcome to stop by or to book a time to meet anytime during the school day.

One of my core goals is to help students build resilience - the ability to manage life’s ups and downs, work through their thoughts and emotions, and bounce back from setbacks with strength and confidence. I believe that emotional wellness is a skill that can be taught, practiced, and strengthened over time. Whether through individual check-in, or school wide programs, I aim to support students in developing the tools they need to thrive both in and out of the classroom.

I also believe in working as a team—with the Student Services team, with students, families, teachers, and staff—because when we come together to support a child, amazing things happen. Communication and collaboration are key, and I look forward to partnering with you throughout the school year.

Students and families are welcome to contact me by Team’s message or by email. Please don’t hesitate to reach out with questions, I’m here to support your student every step of the way, and I’m grateful for the opportunity to do so.

Looking forward to a wonderful year ahead!
