Programming

The Spanish Language and Culture program at Edmonton Catholic Schools offers a progressive learning experience from elementary through high school. Beginning in Kindergarten, students are introduced to Spanish through interactive lessons, focusing on basic vocabulary, phrases, and cultural elements. As they progress to junior high, they refine their speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills while exploring Hispanic traditions and customs. In high school, students advance their language skills with courses at the 10, 20, and 30 levels, engaging in sophisticated discussions, literature, and writing, all while deepening their understanding of Spanish-speaking cultures and history. This comprehensive approach fosters both language proficiency and cultural appreciation throughout their education.

Elementary

As students progress through elementary school in Edmonton Catholic Schools, their exposure to Spanish expands, with approximately 150 minutes of language instruction per week. During this stage, students build on their vocabulary and develop a stronger grasp of grammar and sentence structure. They also deepen their cultural understanding by exploring Spanish and Latin American art, music, cuisine, geography, and history. This well-rounded approach enhances their language skills while fostering an appreciation for the rich heritage of the Spanish-speaking world and its global influence.

Junior High

In junior high, students in Edmonton Catholic Schools continue to strengthen their Spanish language skills with approximately 135 minutes of instruction per week. At this stage, they refine their speaking, listening, reading, and writing abilities in more complex contexts. Students also deepen their cultural understanding by exploring the intricacies of Hispanic traditions and customs. Additionally, they often have opportunities to participate in cultural activities such as Spanish cooking classes, festivals, and field trips, providing immersive experiences that bring the language and heritage to life.

High School

In high school, Edmonton Catholic Schools offer Spanish courses at the 10, 20, and 30 levels, each worth 5 credits. These courses provide students with an advanced academic setting to refine their language skills and apply them in real-world contexts. High school students engage in more sophisticated discussions, read Spanish and Latin American literature, and develop their writing abilities in Spanish, all while continuing to explore the rich culture, history, and global influence of the Spanish-speaking world. By the time they complete their high school Spanish studies, students are not only proficient in the language but also have a deep understanding of the cultural and historical context that shapes it.

Spanish 10-3Y / 20-3Y / 30-3Y (5 CREDITS EACH)

The 3-year Spanish sequence is intended for students who are just beginning their study of Spanish. Students will explore various topics and develop their skills in listening comprehension, reading, speaking, and writing. Oral communication and the study of culture is an important part of these three courses.

Students demonstrating proficiency in Spanish Language and Culture 30 have the opportunity to participate in testing for Diplomas de Español como Lengua Extranjera (DELE) certificates. DELE is the official accreditation of the degree of fluency of the Spanish Language, issued and recognized by the Ministry of Education, Culture and Sport of Spain.

The DELE Diplomas are recognized by official institutions of Spanish speaking countries as well as corporations, chambers of commerce, teachers' associations, school districts and postsecondary educational institutions in Europe and Canada. Several North-American universities award course credits for the diplomas or require their graduate students to take them.
